Beloved since the Edo period (16031868 CE), this pattern of straight vertical lines is inspired by the Japanese plant tokusa, known in English as rough horsetail. It is regarded as a symbol of growth and prosperity as it grows unwaveringly upwards. Originally made in a size to serve a single portion
