They are made of turned and painted wood with colorful chromolithographed paper decoration and tapered "legs" screwed to wood bases

but thanks to a handy attribution written by his maker on the back of the base

punctuated at the center with looped splint for a little handle

I think it is quite a wonderful little thing

I do believe this little box is at least a century old and I'd guess quite a bit older than that

Hollowed out inside, these I believe were carved of walnut and made to use as vesta (match holders), and I think they likely date to the 19th century. Very nicely carved and super sculptural, as if there were feet squeezed inside! Not tiny: each measures approx 3 3 4" t x 2 3 4" l x 1 3 16: w.
