probably to hang it vertically

The smooth-bodied M15 was sometimes assumed to be a burning-type smoke grenade

but then it didn't last forever

Original U.S. Civil War Pair of Federal Infantry Captain Bullion Shoulder Boards German Field Gear dated December 1942Original Set. Only One Available. This is a very nice set of Civil War Federal officer shoulder boards for the rank of Captain, indicated by the double bars at each end. The color inside the border is blue, the color indicating Infantry during the Civil War era and later. It is hand embroidered, made from wool fabric and bullion thread surrounding a stiff cheesecloth core. The boards measure 3 x 1. The boards are in rough shape with one board missing
