During World War II, knitting patterns were distributed for free to encourage knitters to create warm garments for soldiers. As part of the Knitting for Victory initiative, Red Cross chapters set up Work Rooms staffed by Production Corps volunteers. These volunteers oversaw material management, sewed hospital garments, created bandages, and prepared donated clothing for shipment
