This gorgeous box is a fine example of Yosegi-zaiku

and very lovely

and especially the bleeding blue and black of the eyes

The pepper measures 4 3/4" tall x 1 1/2" wide x 1 1/4" deep

I believe this huge hand painted claw likely dates to the early 20th century, and, found in Maine, would guess that is likely where it originated.
